發現上海-The Bridge 8 (8號橋) in Shanghai
2009.10.23
The Bridge 8, in Shanghai, is a unique place for design industry. There are many architectural firms, multimedia studios, fashion designers, game developers… etc. from around the world, all gathering in this place. It's like a communication bridge between China and the rest of the world. There are skywalks connecting each building. There is also communal space for displaying everyone's creation. It has become a platform for open interaction and mutual inspiration in many design fields.
The Bridge 8 used to be an old vehicle factory, and now it has turned to be one of the landmarks in Shanghai with a contemporary look after renovation. The modern elements have been taking place in this industrial project. The choice of new materials and colors are coherent with the old. The historical memory exists at the same time while the new expansion is built.

The small catwalk from one building to another.
Every individual building has a number, and catwalks or skywalks are in between.

SOM is here as well~
Inside the big skywalk behind the colored glass for crossing the street. Those boards are educating the pedestrians about the history of bridge. Shanghai is an amazing city. Nothing is too conservative and nothing is too extreme. Everything old and new blends here with a harmony tone. During the recent years, there is a trend in architecture of remodeling, not demolishing, the old into the new and I personally think the Bridge 8 is one of the positive examples.
